THE GOSPEL
Very simply put the Gospel is the "Good News" that "God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 "He that believeth on Him is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." John 3:18
Why is this such good news? If we understand from God's Word who God is, and who we are in relation to Him, then the Gospel truly is Good News! Consider these simple, basic truths about God and man found in God's Word.
1) God is Holy and Man is a Sinner - Therefore we have a Problem with Sin
- God's glory is His Holiness - "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts." Isaiah 6:3
- Man falls short of that glory - "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God" Romans 3:10,23
- Like it is a crime to break man's law, it is a sin to break God's law.
- Just compare yourself honestly to the 10 commandments, Exodus 20:1-17. We have all sinned or broken God's law.
- Our sin has separated us from God - "But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you that he will not hear." Isaiah 59:2
2) God is Just - Therefore there is a Penalty for our Sin
- God is a fair and just judge - "...Shall not the God of all the earth do right." Genesis 18:25b
- We deserve death (separation from God) for our sin "For the wages (what we earn and deserve) of sin is death" Roman 6:23a
- Man is awaiting judgment from God - "It is appointed unto man once to die, but after this the judgement" Hebrews 9:27
- We read of the just penalty for man's sin that will be delivered by God at the Great White Throne judgment in Revelation 20:11-15; "And whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire." Revelation 20:15
- When we really understand what we actually deserve from God for our sin, the Gospel really is Good News!! Great News!! The Best News!! The most important news in all of life!!!
3) God is Loving - Therefore God made the Payment for our Sin for us in Jesus Christ.
- God loved us so much that He sent His Son to die for us so we could live - "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son." John 3:16
- God showed His love through Jesus death in our place for our sin - "God commendeth (demonstrated) his love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
- On the cross just before He died, Jesus declared, "It is finished!" John 19:30 With His death, he satisfied God's wrath against our sin! Wow! He suffered all that for me!
- This was always God's plan and was prophesied hundreds of years before by the prophet Isaiah, "He was wounded for our transgression, he was bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our sin was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned everyone to his own way, and the Lord hath laid upon him the iniquity of us all." Isaiah 53:5,6
4) God is Gracious - Therefore He Provided Salvation from our Sin as a free gift, by grace through faith
- Salvation is a gift from God - "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" Romans 6:23
- A gift is an undeserved expression of love, in contrast to a wage which is earned and deserved.
- We are saved by God's grace, not our good works - "For by grace are we saved through faith, it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8,9
- Grace is when God gives us what we don't deserve, or enables us to do what we cannot do on our own.
- No wonder John Newton , the slave trader who repented of his sin and trusted Jesus as his Savior, wrote the wonderful hymn, "Amazing Grace" ! "Oh, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me." God's Grace truly is amazing!!! He even saved me!
5) God is Faithful - He keeps His Promise of Salvation if we will but trust Him and receive His gift
- God cannot lie - "In hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before the world began." Titus 1:2
- Believe on Jesus Christ - "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness" Romans 10:10a
- Call on Jesus Christ to forgive your sin and save you - "...with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:10b; "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shalt be saved." Romans 10:13
- God wants you to know we are saved! "These things have I written unto you . . . that ye may know that ye have eternal life." I John 5:11-13
- Friend, would do you believe the Good News that God just showed you from His Word?
- Will you call on Jesus to forgive you of your sin right now? God will be good on His promise, if you will just believe Him and call upon Jesus!
- If you do, I would love to hear form you!
- If you have quesitons, I would love to hear from you too!
- Thanks for reading the Gospel - the Good News from God to man!
